A sake vessel traditionally used in the tea ceremony, which is the origin of kaiseki cuisine. It is designed with a long, slender spout for pouring sake beautifully, and the upper part of the mouth is open to show the amount of sake. Made of iron, it keeps cold sake from becoming lukewarm. By putting sake directly into it and chilling it in the refrigerator, the sake can be kept at a cold temperature until it is finished. It can also be heated directly over a fire for hot sake.

Crafted By

Seikodo
Founded in the Edo period and currently thriving at its 10th generation, Seikodo started as a small casting workshop founded by its first maker, Kiroku, in Domachi, Yamagata-city, where the casting industry flourished. Fast forward to today, Takumi, the 10th generation now follows the footsteps of all his ancestors, devoting all their energy into making Seikodo a specialised atelier of iron tea pots & iron kettles.

Care Instructions

As nature takes its course, iron as a material will eventually rust and erode, returning back to its original state. However, when taken care of properly, it can be preserved to last and used over a very long time.

- The body is coated with lacquer and a special oxidant film in order to stop the rusting, therefore it might have a slight chemical smell to it at first. To remove the smell, simply fill the kettle with water together with 8 to 10 pieces of ginger, and then boil it. After boiling it for a few times, the smell will eventually go away.
- Do not worry if a few red brown spots appear after multiple usage. You will be able to enjoy tasty hot water with rich minerals.
- After using the kettle, it is important to keep the insides dry. Do not heat an empty pot, it may cause the lacquer inside to melt which will cause the water to get murky and induce leaking.
- Do not wash with polishing powder, sand, or a metal brush.
- The outside of the pot is already coated with lacquer, so please simply wipe it with a dry cloth.
- To dry the insides and outsides of the pot perfectly, keep it in a dry and airy place.
