Drawn to the charm of old Karatsu ware, Raizan Yasunaga continues to create pottery that, while rooted in tradition, seeks to carry the essence of Karatsu into the future. This tea bowl demonstrates a harmonious blend of two iconic expressions of Karatsu ware—the kawakujira decorative technique and the White Karatsu glaze with crawling effect.

The bowl’s organic form draws the eye, while the blackened rim, created with iron-based pigment, provides a striking contrast to the soft, muted white glaze. The interplay between these elements is captivating, creating layers of depth and texture. As the glaze shrinks, it forms fine crackles, further enriching the surface with a dynamic, natural beauty.

The unglazed kodai (foot) adds a tasteful, earthy touch. The concept of admiring the keshiki (scenery) in tea bowls celebrates the evolving beauty, depth, and character that develop over time, making this tea bowl a piece to be treasured.

Raizan Yasunaga
A ceramic artist based in Karatsu, Saga Prefecture. Drawn to Karatsu ware, he honed his craft studying under Sajiro Tanaka and Dohei Fujinoki. Later he built his own nobori-gama (climbing kiln) in Osugi, Karatsu, and became independent. Using various techniques of Karatsu ware, he dedicated himself to the art of ceramics, striving to express the beauty brought to life by the harmony between people and nature.

Care Instructions

- Do not use in dishwasher or microwave.
- Do not use in oven or on open fire.
- Clean the product with non-abrasive, soft scouring pad.
- For your own safety, do not use any item that is chipped or cracked.

"Medome" method for new pottery:
- Put the pottery into a pot with some rice grains (alternatively rice powder, flour or starch) and fill up water.
- Boil it on low heat for 10 to 20 minutes.
- Let it cool down, rinse well and dry thoroughly.

When can I receive my order?

1. Local Shipping (Standard)

Upon receiving your order, please allow us 1-3 business days to prepare the shipment. Your order should arrive within 3-5 business days.

2. Local Shipping (Express)

To secure delivery on next day, please place your order before 2pm and choose express shipping. For orders made by 4pm between Monday to Friday, we will schedule delivery on the next day. For orders made on Sundays and Public Holidays, the earliest delivery will be on the following business day.
