This jar reflects Masahiko Imanishi’s deep connection to Ko-Tanba, the old tradition of Tanba ware, and his dedication to preserving and evolving the traditional craft of his hometown, Tanba-Tachikui in Hyogo Prefecture. Made from local Tanba clay, the jar features a chrysanthemum motif carved using the kugi-bori technique, where intricate designs are etched with a nail-like tool. The chrysanthemum, symbolizing longevity and renewal, complements the jar’s rugged texture, creating a harmonious blend of aesthetic beauty and cultural significance.

Fired in a traditional ja-gama (snake kiln), the jar’s distinctive form and finish are the result of a careful 4-5 day firing process, conducted fewer than ten times a year. The kiln, with its elongated, narrow shape and minimal slope, creates a unique firing environment that enhances the complexity of the final pieces. The glossy finish varies depending on the cooling speed, ensuring each piece is singular and full of vitality. By gathering his own clay, he maintains a deep connection to the natural elements that define Tanba ware. While Tanba ware may not have received as much attention as other six ancient kilns, Imanishi’s work contributes to its evolving story, bringing to light the rich history and expressive potential of this tradition.
