The Uzukumaru jar is a type of vessel that originally served a utilitarian purpose, used for storing grains or oils. It was later reimagined by tea practitioners as flower vases. The name “Uzukumaru” derives from its appearance, resembling a person crouching or squatting down. It is a distinctive feature of Shigaraki ware. The beauty of Uzukumaru lies in its humble and endearing impression, with a slightly titled double-layered mouth and a bulging body. While the double mouth may be considered a decorative feature in the present time, it is believed that it was initially designed for tying ropes around the neck, allowing people to carry the pot on their back or hang it in the sun to dry.

Katsunori Sawa’s rendition of the jar showcases a beautiful harmony of colors resulting from the firing process. It combines a transparent, glass-like quality with a glossy burnt effect. These captivating scenes are achieved by swiftly pulling the vessel out from the hot kiln and rapidly cooling it. Upon observing the jar as a whole, one may notice a smiling face seemingly painted by the natural ash glaze. This unintentional but delightful surprise gift from the kiln adds to the charm of Sawa’s work.
