Crafted from Uji clay, this teacup features brush marks that evoke the flowing Uji River. With repeated use, the Uji clay will gradually develop a more refined and tasteful appearance. We recommend pairing it with its matching houhin of the same series.

Crafted By

Situated in Uji, a region famous for tea production, Asahiyaki was given its kiln name “Asahi,” by Kobori Enshu, who selected it as one of the “Enshu Seven Kilns.” Since then, Asahiyaki has crafted tea utensils using clay sourced from Uji.

Asahiyaki's distinctive aesthetic is largely a result of their kiln process, each imparting different effects on the clay's surface. Their signature style "kase," features a speckled pattern reminiscent of a deer's back. This pattern is challenging to achieve deliberately within the fine-grained clay and gradient glaze.

The clay used by Asahiyaki is sourced from Uji's mountains, an area designated as a national preservation area. They also honor their heritage by using clay collected by their ancestors centuries ago. Over time, Asahiyaki has adapted to cultural shifts, changes in the tea ceremony's popularity, and fluctuations in economic prosperity to continue their craft.
