This small tea bowl by Japanese ceramic artist Rui Mito embodies the quiet beauty of Madara Karatsu ware. Mito personally digs and prepares her own clay, grounding each work in a deep connection to the earth and the traditions of Karatsu pottery. Though modest in scale, the bowl carries a strong presence, enhanced by the expressive surface created through its distinctive glaze. The softly mottled tones and subtle variations reveal the natural interaction between clay, ash, and fire, resulting in a piece that feels both intimate and timeless.

Crafted By

Rui Mito
Born in 1978, Fukuoka, Ms. Rui Mito graduated from Arita College of Ceramics in 2006. Her attraction to Shino tea bowls piqued her interest in pottery from around the world and she became an apprentice of Ms. Kiyomi Kawakami, a ceramic artist in Karatsu. Ms. Mito fell in love with Karatsu ware as they present a variety of expressions resulting from the ways they are fired. She built her own wood-fired kiln in Karatsu in 2009 and became a professional pottery artist. She often conceptualises her works in her mind to convey her feelings in them. Her works are feminine and gentle, yet at the same time, with a strong core.
