Takao Tahara developed the Ryuhaku Glaze, or "flowing white glaze," inspired by the glaze on ancient Hagi ceramic fragments unearthed near the historic kilns in Sonose. He begins with a white glaze typical of Hagi ware as the base and then applies an ash glaze over it, creating a distinctive, rich color. For pieces featuring the flowing white glaze, he keeps the forms simple to convey a sense of dignified tension, as seen in this tea bowl. The rim of the bowl resembles flower petals, and the way the glaze is applied and flows forms a pool-like effect, which is particularly captivating. The smooth, supple texture achieved is uncommon and highly admired.
