The name “Katade” (literally meaning strong hand), refers to the hard, dense nature of the clay and glaze used in these bowls, which gives them a sturdy, almost porcelain-like quality. Originating from Korean ceramics in the early Joseon dynasty, katade is one of the many types of Korai chawan that used in the Japanese tea ceremony.

Like many katade tea bowls, Tori Yoshino's interpretation features a graceful, rounded form with a gently flared rim. The tea bowl is adorned with a soft, translucent white glaze, accented with iron specks that add depth and texture to its surface. The translucent glaze cascades down at the front of the bowl, forming a distinctive drip that creates a natural keshiki or landscape, enhancing its overall character.

Despite its seemingly simple appearance, a closer inspection reveals its nuanced beauty, such as the delicate kan-nyu crackles that subtly spread across its finely grained body. The unglazed foot of the bowl adds another layer of rustic charm, paying homage to the traditional elements of Hagi ware.

Crafted By

Tori Yoshino
A ceramic artist based in Mine City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. Yoshino cultivated a deep connection with pottery from a young age, influenced by his mother's passion for tea ceremonies. After formal training in Arita, he honed his skills for a decade under the guidance of the 12th-generation Koraizaemon Saka.

Yoshino's artistic identity is marked by a strong affinity for the gentle aesthetics of Hagi ware and an appreciation for the "biwa color," reminiscent of loquats. He primarily employs Daido-tsuchi clay but frequently incorporates clay from the nearby Akiyoshi-dai plateau to infuse
depth and diversity into his work. Beyond Hagi ware, he explores Joseonstyle pottery techniques, such as "kakiotoshi" (scraping off) and iron painting, reflecting his dedicated artistic journey.
