Crafted in the Ido style, this Hagi tea bowl embodies Tori Yoshino's appreciation for the biwa color, resembling the hues of loquats. It features a straight conical shape and a tall, bamboo stem-like footed base covered with extensive glaze crawling, reminiscent of the kairagi (literally, plum flower skin) texture found on the foot of classical Ido tea bowl. The cracked patterns add depth and dynamism to the piece. Over time, as tea seeps into these tiny cracks with each use, the glaze's color gradually transforms, ensuring that the vessel becomes a truly unique work of art.

Crafted By

Tori Yoshino
A ceramic artist based in Mine City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. Yoshino cultivated a deep connection with pottery from a young age, influenced by his mother's passion for tea ceremonies. After formal training in Arita, he honed his skills for a decade under the guidance of the 12th-generation Koraizaemon Saka.

Yoshino's artistic identity is marked by a strong affinity for the gentle aesthetics of Hagi ware and an appreciation for the "biwa color," reminiscent of loquats. He primarily employs Daido-tsuchi clay but frequently incorporates clay from the nearby Akiyoshi-dai plateau to infuse
depth and diversity into his work. Beyond Hagi ware, he explores Joseonstyle pottery techniques, such as "kakiotoshi" (scraping off) and iron painting, reflecting his dedicated artistic journey.
