Raw, rustic, and earthy, this sake cup evokes the essence of an ancient vessel, as though it has endured since the Muromachi period. The intricate cracks across both its outer and inner surfaces imbue it with a weathered texture and dignified presence, beautifully capturing the Tani’s philosophy. These marks suggest a sense of timelessness, as if the cup has gracefully withstood the passage of centuries.

Crafted By

Q Tani
A ceramic artist based in Shigaraki, Shiga Prefecture. He has dedicated himself to perfecting the yakishime technique of high-fired unglazed stoneware, using an ana-gama kiln he built himself, taking the “Ko-Shigaraki” jars and pots from the Muromachi period (1336-1573) as his benchmark.

[Shigaraki ware]
A style of ceramics produced in Shigaraki, Shiga Prefecture. Fired at high temperatures without glaze, it is characterized by a tactile landscape resulting from its coarse base material and natural ash glaze. One of the six ancient kilns in Japan.
