Yu Nishioka is deeply dedicated to his craft, personally sourcing clay from various sites to find the perfect material for his work. He has a particular fascination with Ki-Seto ware and strives to master the “aburage-de” technique, which creates a texture reminiscent of deep-fried tofu, with a matte and opaque finish.

This bowl, fired in his own wood kiln, is the result of a meticulous process that requires careful use of limited kiln space to achieve the desired effect. The piece is imbued with a soft, pale yellow hue, radiating a warmth that is truly rare and remarkable.

Crafted By

Yu Nishioka
A ceramic artist from Chiba Prefecture, apprenticed under Goro Suzuki before establishing his own studio in Mino, Gifu. With a background in furniture and instrument making, he became captivated by ceramics, particularly the challenging Ki-Seto texture. Now, he creates works that showcase the unique qualities of Mino clay, which he personally sources and digs.

[Ki-Seto Ware]
Ki-Seto ware, originating in Mino during the Momoyama period (1573-1603), is crafted with an ash glaze in oxidation firing. Achieving the distinctive aburage-de texture is extremely challenging, requiring precise control over various factors, and can only be realized in a small kiln area. Due to these difficulties, few artisans attempt genuine Ki-Seto today. However, for Yu, this complexity fuels his passion for ceramics, earning his works significant attention as he tirelessly pursues the ideal expression of Ki-Seto ware.
