The beauty of black streaks

Organic and bold vessel created by Eiko Tanaka, who devotes herself to the full making process from wood grinding to lacquering. This marble-like black streaks pattern found on the horse chestnut was caused by the growth of bacteria. This kind of wood is known as “spalted” wood, which is rare and difficult to find, just like hunting truffles in the forest. With the skillful wood turning and lacquer painting techniques performed by the artist, the unique Japanese horse chestnut is now given a new life.
